The power of cortisol

We know a caloric deficit is the key for weight loss; however, hormones can certainly influence weight loss progress if they fall outside their normal range.

Cortisol is well known for its role in the body’s response to physical and psychological stress. When we experience acute stress, cortisol levels rise which can influence how we behave.

The effects of stress differ based on the type and duration. During acute stress, appetite is typically suppressed. Chronic stress however, generally promotes an increased consumption of energy dense foods. It has also been linked with obesity & weight gain in several studies.

Why does this matter for weight loss?

Chronic stress can lead to a variety of issues, which can make weight loss harder for many. Some of these include anxiety/depression, binge eating, digestive issues, muscle pain, sleeping difficulties, making weight loss much harder and a slower process overall.

Cortisol has also been shown to regulate food behaviour and choice, with higher levels of cortisol predicting stress-induced eating as well as binge-eating.
